Fifteen year old CJ may be young, but she is already very focused on working towards and achieving some big dreams. The aspiring marine biologist and underwater photographer has one goal; to protect the ocean. When not at school, CJ spends all her time free diving or working alongside her family and their clothing brand Seascape Clothing. All proceeds go towards organisations that are protecting our oceans.
Which explains where this bundle of energy gets her passion and determination from. And her efforts don’t go unnoticed. This year CJ has proudly become a Global Youth Ambassador which will see her travelling to Uganda late 2017.
We managed to pin this enthusiastic teenager down to get to know her a little better ...
You're an aspiring marine biologist and passionate conservationist. Who inspires you?
I am inspired by Madison Stewart (aka) Shark Girl. She shares a love for sharks and the ocean like myself, and also wants to see our oceans happy and preserved. Her and I both hate the damage and destruction that humans are having on the marine life and its ecosystems. She has filmed many anti shark culling videos, and has protested against shark cull which is something I feel deeply passionate about. I absolutely adore sharks and think they are such magnificent creatures that a worth way more alive then in a bowl of soup.
What draws you into the underwater world?
My love for the ocean and its marine life started at a very young age. I just remember my parents always encouraging me to get out in the water and love what Mother Nature has provided me. The ocean world is my second home. It's a place of beauty and such curiosity. Free diving in the sea is magical, and so peaceful. I forget about the mainland and just get lost in the ravishing blue waters. Not to mention the incredible marine life. I am always drawn to the ocean and its funky, unique little creatures which is why I believe we should protect them.
How does spending all your time in the ocean take a toll on your skin?
The only down side to being an ocean freak is the crusty, dry skin you get after hopping out of the water. I have noticed over the years that my skin has suffered from sunburn, peeling and just straight up dryness and let me tell you, it ain't all that pretty! Which is why Ama Balm is perfect for hydration and relief and always makes my skin feel as smooth as a baby’s bottom.
Once school's out, what will you be up to this summer?
Eventually school will be out, and anyone who has gone through high school knows how stressful exams and tests can be, which is why this summer I plan to soak up the sunshine and hit the beach! My family and I have planned to take a trip around the North Island coast and explore the aqua blue waters that are calling us. I hope to see new and groovy wildlife!!
What does being adventurous mean to you?
To me, adventure is walking out your front door and not knowing what will happen next, approaching every day and all situations with a sense of openness and exhilaration. Develop something awesome for the society or something for the needy. Explore a place you've never explored! Just let go and allow yourself to be one with nature.
